An investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing, Merseyside Police said. A 30-year-old man from the Wirral has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving. He is currently in custody.

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, Lead Investigating Officer from Merseyside Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU), said: “Our thoughts are with Mike’s family at this sad time and they are being supported by specialist officers. It is now a priority for us to get answers for them about how the collision occurred and my team are working to establish key facts.

“This collision happened on a busy part of the motorway network. Early enquiries show there were a number of vehicles in the area at that time, and I believe it may have been witnessed by members of the public or have been captured on dash cameras. I would appeal directly to anyone who saw anything and who has yet to speak with my team to please get in touch.

“In addition, a man has been arrested in connection with this matter and remains in police custody. He will be interviewed by detectives later today. I believe that both Mike and the arrested person have been riding their motorcycles having visited a pub on Ferry Road by the River Mersey and have travelled from that location to the scene of the collision.

“To that end I appeal for anyone who may have been a blue Suzuki Bandit and a black Kawasaki travelling together just prior to the collision to please get in touch.” Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC, contact SCIU on 0151 777 5747, or email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk quoting reference number 25000281781.
