Bristol City loanee Sam Bell has set out his goals for his loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers, with the forward keen to help the Chairboys get back to where they “should be” in the League One table after firing them to their first away win of the season.

Bell, who made the temporary move to Adams Park from Ashton Gate on transfer deadline day, scored the third goal of his loan spell as Michael Duff’s side ran out 1-0 winners over Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon to move a point clear of the relegation zone.

In a tight game at the DW Stadium, the 23-year-old produced what proved to be the winner when he turned home with his right foot from close range, having been picked out by a low Fred Onyedinma cross at the end of a swift counter-attacking move.

Wycombe had to deal with plenty of pressure from the Latics over the remainder of the contest, but with the aid of goalkeeper Will Norris, the Chairboys were able to return to Adams Park with all three points and a first away league clean sheet of the campaign.

“I think everyone is pretty tired, both physically and mentally,” Bell told Wycombe’s media team post-match. “It was a tough grind, but we all dug in and got the three points in the end.”

On his goal, the forward added, “I think it was perhaps one of the only bits of quality in the game, to be honest. Hendo drove with the ball well, played Fred in, and we’ve worked on it a lot in the week, just getting into the middle of the goal.

“Thankfully, Fred put in a great ball, and I was there to finish it off.

“Naturally, we sort of sink into a bit of a protection mode,” he continued. “But I thought throughout the game, we ran for each other, we fought for each other, and then there were times where certain individuals had to dig us out, like Will’s save right at the end.

“That was crucial, but there were other moments where the lads did similar things. That’s what I mean by we’ve got that togetherness, and we really fought for each other today.”

Prior to making the move to Adams Park in early September, Bell’s minutes at Ashton Gate had been rather limited over the course of the last couple of seasons.

The 23-year-old didn’t start a single Championship game for the Robins last term, and his only competitive involvement under Gerhard Struber had come in the form of a 20-minute cameo against Sheffield United and a start in a much-changed side to face Fulham in the Carabao Cup.

Despite the fact that Bell’s contract in BS3 is set to expire at the end of the season, when his spell with Wycombe comes to an end, Struber has insisted that he could still have a future in south Bristol beyond the end of his current deal.

With an awful lot of football to be played between now and then, however, the forward’s focus is very much on the Chairboys and their push to recover after a disappointing start to the campaign.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far,” the City loanee explained. “There’s a lot of the season to go still, so hopefully, as a team we can get more goals and for myself personally get more goals and really help the team to kick on and move up the league [to] where we should be.

“If we can build on today’s away win, it will be really key for our season because we’ve done well at home the last few weeks or so,” Bell continued. “If we can start picking up results and points away from home, I think that will be massive for getting ourselves up the league.”
