Restaurant chain Loungers has submitted a planning application to Liverpool City Council to occupy the old Leaf site on Bold Street. New images show how the venue could transform under the café-bar group, with proposals for new signage and lights on the buildings front.

Leaf closed for good on Sunday, September 21, after more than 15 years of trading in the city centre. The venue, run by siblings Natalie and Graham Haywood, first opened in 2010 and expanded across the city to Smithdown Road and West Kirby.

Earlier this year, the ECHO reported how the West Kirby branch had closed citing financial struggles and a “fragile industry” that looked “bleaker than ever”. Natalie confirmed that the company would focus on its remaining sites following the closure.

Loungers is among those interested and is “hopeful” about taking over. The group has sites including Milo Lounge on Lark Lane and Brasco Lounge on Mann Island in Liverpool.

Loungers’s planning application includes a silver mirrored rail protruding from the base of the signage zone for the letters to sit on. The individual letters are to have off-white faces and silver mirrored returns and to be internally lit.

The main signage zone is to be an acrylic light box fixed flush to the wall in yellow with a mirrored silver frame. The light box is to be internally lit with flat cut silver mirrored metal zig zag overlay detail.

Toward the top of the building is to be double-sided projection signs with blue mould detailing and internally lit off white projecting letters, set on a mirrored chrome background panel. Illumination to letters to b in soft, warm white.

‘Cafe’ and ‘Bar’ signs on either side of the main signage will be tiled in a small tiled section with blue moulding detail to top and bottom.

A spokesperson for Loungers previously told the ECHO: “We are in advanced negotiations on a site on Bold Street, Liverpool. It’s a great area and we are hopeful to join the local community by opening a Lounge and creating between 30-40 new jobs.

“Nothing is totally confirmed yet, however, for every Lounge we open, it’s important to us that we give back to the community.

“We partner with local charities to raise funds, our spaces are used for meetings of local groups and businesses, and we encourage customers to use us as a community hub. We hope to have more information on the site on Bold Street soon.”
