AIADWA members protest in Ramanathapuram, demanding disbursal of pending wages on Tuesday.

Members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) here on Tuesday staged a demonstration demanding that the Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) 100-day employment scheme be increased to 200 days.

​District President M. Lakshmi, addressing the protesters, highlighted that the workers hired under the scheme were not given their wages for the past several months.

She added that steps should be taken immediately to disburse the wage arrears as the Deepavali was fast approaching.

They alleged that the Union government was refusing to provide funds if the was was done in water bodies in Tamil Nadu.

The demands stressed the need to increase the 100-day work to 200 days and provide a wage of ₹600, offer work for four hours to differently abled persons, and provide a travel allowance if the worksite is far away.

State Deputy Secretary Karpagam, District Vice President Kannagi, and others were present in the protest.
