Casemiro could stay at Manchester United beyond this season – but only if he takes a significant pay cut.

The Brazil international and five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid is among United’s highest earners with a salary of around £300,000-a-week.

The midfielder is out of contract at the end of this season, although United have an option to extend his deal by an additional 12 months. But United would look to negotiate any extension for the 33-year-old on reduced terms.

Casemiro has re-established himself as an automatic pick at United under Ruben Amorim and is set to start Sunday’s visit to arch rivals Liverpool when the Premier League returns following the international break.

United have been on a mission to reduce their wage bill in recent years and Casemiro is one of the player salaries they would be looking to reduce if he stays on for next season.

The midfield is the priority area of the team that United will look to strengthen next summer, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton among their intended targets.

That would open the door for Casemiro to leave as a free agent , with clubs in his native Brazil and the Saudi Pro League having expressed interest in signing him next year.

But with the futures of Kobbie Maintoo and Manuel Ugarte uncertain, with both unable to get into Amorim’s first-choice selection, there could be a situation where Casemiro – who can start talking to foreign clubs from January – stays at Old Trafford.
