He married Carin Dabelstein in 1971, and the pair welcomed three children together: Princess Stephanie, Prince Hubertus, and Prince Alexander. They remained together until Carin passed away with multiple sclerosis in 2023. After his death this month, Prince Andreas was succeeded as head of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha by his oldest son, Hubertus.

While Prince Andreas reportedly lamented the lack of warmth between his house and the British royal family, the Court Circular noted that King Charles was represented at the funeral by the Margrave of Baden, His Majesty’s first cousin once removed.

The great and the gilded of the European aristocracy also gathered for the service. Prince Laurent of Belgium, brother of King Philippe, joined the mourners, as did Franz, Duke of Bavaria (great-grandson of King Ludwig III, the last ruling monarch of Bavaria), who was accompanied by Princess Sophie of Bavaria (who welcomed a baby with her husband, Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, last year). Georg Friderich, Prince of Prussia, was among the attendees, as were the Duke of Württemberg, the Prince and Princess of Schaumburg-Lippe, and Princess Kalina of Bulgaria.
