On Wednesday’s edition of Good Morning Britain, ITV audiences witnessed Susanna Reid teaming up with Martin Lewis to helm the programme.

Throughout the latest broadcast of Good Morning Britain, Susanna Reid was accompanied by financial expert Martin Lewis.

One subject the pair discussed was an alteration to council tax collection regulations in Wales.

Martin informed ITV watchers, who were recently stunned by a throwback photograph of a one star, that council tax debt recovery represents ‘by far’ the most catastrophic type of debt collection.

He outlined that within three weeks of defaulting on a single monthly instalment, people could face demands to settle the full annual amount.

Martin stated: “It’s devastating, it’s destructive, it hurts people’s mental health, which is why I’ve been campaigning on this through my money mental health policy charity.”

Referencing Martin’s previous May appearance on the programme, they broadcast footage of his conversation with government minister Pat McFadden, who indicated there would be a consultation regarding extending the timeframe for debt settlement.

In additional footage, Martin addresses his camera directly, declaring, “I’m sitting there afterward, going ‘yes!’

“I cannot tell you how many desperate people I have met whose lives have been absolutely ruined by this form of debt collection.”

Martin expressed his hope at the time that this would signal the start of changes in council debt collection. As the camera panned back to Susanna and Martin in the studio, Susanna queried about what had changed.

In response, Martin admitted: “Yeah, I did have a little cry after that show, to be honest, because it is a lot of work that we’ve gone through.”

He then explained to Susanna that the regulations vary across the UK nations. He stated: “In Wales, there is the new way that the rules are going to work in the future.

“Instead of the current 21 days that you have, where they can go from saying, ‘You’ve missed your monthly payment and now you have to pay for the year’.

“They’re going to move it to 62 (days). So, they’re going from three weeks to nine weeks; that is a very big improvement. We’re calling for it to be three months, so it’s not as long as I’d like, I need to be honest.”

“The reason we’re going for it to be at least three months is because that’s what a commercial company would have to wait, three months before it can escalate, and you say you have to pay the whole bill. We don’t think it’s right that councils are able to do it quicker.”

However, when it comes to England, Martin clarified that the consultation has been completed.

He added, “I now don’t know when that consultation will be published, but we’ve got a government minister coming on the programme later from the Treasury.

“I have given specific notice that I am going to ask that question so that they can’t say, ‘I’ll have to look into that’. So we should get an answer on that.”
