After a mixed start to the season regarding Liverpool’s performances, Troy Deeney has highlighted one player who appears to be angrier at his teammates than normal.

Liverpool suffered three consecutive defeats heading into the international break across all competitions, which is unusual territory for the Reds.

However, those results have been coming, with Jamie Carragher having highlighted Liverpool’s defensive problems from the season’s opening day.

Arne Slot’s men previously relied on last-minute goals to produce positive results, and despite picking up plenty of points so far, there appears to be some frustration building at Anfield.

Liverpool have been a solid defensive unit for several years now, dating back to Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club, and Virgil van Dijk has been a big reason for that.

He has provided a calming presence at the back, which has benefited the Reds. He’s been relied upon to deliver great quality while organising everyone within the squad.

However, Deeney believes that the Liverpool captain is now showing signs of anger during the latest episode of The Football Exchange.

“The biggest telltale sign for that is when you watch Virgil and I watch Virgil closely because I think he’s amazing as you know, but he’s so frustrated with people now.

“And he’s getting angrier on the pitch. He never used to seem flustered, and now you see him screaming and shouting at people.”

Van Dijk could be showing signs of frustration at some of his defensive teammates, who have been getting called out for their performances this season.

Gary Neville claimed Milos Kerkez is playing “like a baby” since moving to Anfield, while Liverpool fans have slammed Ibrahima Konate for his performances this season.

Liverpool are struggling defensively this season

Liverpool have only been able to keep two clean sheets this season across all competitions, coming from their 1-0 victories against Arsenal and Burnley.

However, they have struggled massively with the defensive side of their game, which has led to people questioning whether they can retain the Premier League this season.

Only Manchester United have conceded more goals than Slot’s side in the top half of the Premier League this season, and they will have to address that.

Liverpool’s failure to sign Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window is starting to look alarming, and the Reds won’t be able to change this until the summer.
