Man Utd head visit Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday and their last trip to Anfield prompted Bruno Fernandes to question the team
Bruno Fernandes was left frustrated by Manchester United’s lack of consistency after the 2-2 draw at Anfield last season
In the aftermath of Manchester United’s pulsating draw with Liverpool in January, Reds skipper Bruno Fernandes aired his frustrations.
It wasn’t so much with United’s showing at Anfield, where they came from behind to lead 2-1 before being pegged back in an enthralling draw, it was more that Ruben Amorim’s side had shown they were capable of going toe-to-toe with the best.
The 2-2 with Liverpool last season came a few weeks after United beat Manchester City at the Etihad while United also knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup at the Emirates last winter.
Those displays against the teams that took the top three places in the Premier League belied United’s ultimate 15th place finishing position as the Reds endured their worst domestic campaign since they were relegated in 1974. That was Fernandes’ main gripe, the absence of consistency that saw United take one step forward and two steps back.
“I’m pretty upset,” lambasted Fernandes moments after the full time whistle at Liverpool in January. “Because, if we can show this today against Liverpool at Anfield, who are first in the league and who have been probably the outstanding team in the league this season, why can’t we do this every week?”
Nine months on the same concerns remain. Amorim’s men have won three and lost three of their opening seven league games and been dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town.
There were positives in defeat to Arsenal on the opening day and wins over Chelsea and Sunderland hinted at the potential in this United side. But demoralising defeats to Brentford and Manchester City undermine any signs of progress.
Fernandes and Amorim will hope this weekend’s trip to Liverpool can provide a positive result and a springboard to consistency.
