Scots are used to seeing shops and stores change hands. If you ask anyone who has been living in the Dear Green Place for a while, they will tell you Glasgow’s retail sector has switched up considerably over the last few years.

While some units have closed down, other spaces have opened, like the new Uniqlo store on Argyle Street. And it seems another opportunity has arisen for buyers relating to a “high-profile” Glasgow supermarket.

Lidl in Finnieston, the popular area situated between the city centre and Glasgow’s West End, has gone up for sale for more than £7 million in what has been dubbed a “rare” opportunity for prospective owners.

The German budget retailer, which has been expanding strongly throughout Europe for over 50 years, has been put on the market by CBRE for offers in excess of £7.6 million, according to Glasgow Times.

The standalone supermarket covers 18,482 square feet and includes 67 parking spaces and 16 bicycle racks.

The food store is situated close to Argyle Street, one of the main arterial routes heading east into the city centre and west to the West End.

Originally a retail warehouse, the property underwent a refurbishment in 2018 and again in 2024 to meet Lidl’s latest store format. But the site is now on the market, presumably ready to undergo yet another iteration.

Martyn Brown, senior director at CBRE Scotland, said: “This high-profile supermarket asset represents a rare opportunity for investors.

“Combining a secure income profile with the undoubted covenant of Lidl, underpinned by a substantial underlying residential site value, situated in one of the city’s most sought-after neighbourhoods.”

As mentioned, the site is in a prime spot – off the Finnieston Strip and around the corner from major entertainment hubs including OVO Hydro and SEC. It is also a stone’s throw from the slip off to the Clydeside Expressway.

The grocery chain is not the first around the West End to be getting flogged.

A major retailer has submitted plans to replace a M&S Simply Food unit in Glasgow following its imminent closure.

Sainsbury’s have submitted plans to open a Sainsbury’s Local store at 169 Great George Street, just off Byres Road, in Glasgow’s West End. The store would replace the M&S Simply Food store, set to close at the end of October.

Plans have been submitted for “installation of illuminated and non illuminated fascia signage, panel signage adjacent to the entrance and internal window graphics” in the heart of the popular student area, reports GlasgowWorld.

The plans detail the distinct orange Sainsbury’s branding alongside that of Argos, which will operate as a collection point within the store. Glasgow City Council have set a decision date of Friday, November 28, 2025.

In August, it was announced that the M&S store near Byres Road will close its doors for the final time on October 25. The company said the decision was made after “careful consideration and in line with our lease ending”.
