Police issued a statement on the harrowing tragedy

A man died after he was engulfed by fire on a Birmingham street.
The man, in his 40s, was seen covered head-to-toe in flames at the corner of Hospital Street and Bridge Street West in Newtown shortly after 3.40pm on Wednesday, October 8.
Police said the man received treatment at the scene but died in hospital a short time later.

His death was not being treated as suspicious.
Harrowing footage of the incident was shared widely on instant messaging platform WhatsApp this week.
One man was seen using a fire extinguisher to quickly douse the flames.

Shout 85258 is a free, confidential, anonymous mental health text support service. Texting the word ‘SHOUT’ to 85258 will start a conversation with a trained Shout volunteer, who will text you back and forth.
Students Against Depression is a website for students who are depressed, have a low mood or are having suicidal thoughts. Bullying UK is a website for both children and adults affected by bullying studentsagainstdepression.org

The video was filmed by someone from a residential building located on the corner of the two streets.
West Midlands Ambulance Service’s press office said it could not find any record of paramedics attending the incident.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson told BirminghamLive this afternoon: “We were called to Hospital Street in Newtown, shortly after 3.40pm on October 8, after receiving reports a man had suffered burn injuries.
“The man, in his 40s, received treatment at the scene but sadly died in hospital a short time later.
“His death is not being treated as suspicious.”
