Signage has been posted in a Hanover Street unit as a popular Royal Albert Dock business prepares to expand across the city. Mexican restaurant Madre has confirmed plans to open a tequila-led Mexican pool hall, taqueria and bar in the unit previously occupied by nightlife venue MOJO.
MOJO was a staple of the city’s nightlife and a popular rock and roll venue since its opening in 2008. Originally located on Back Berry Street, the bar initially closed in August 2023 to make way for a major expansion on Hanover Street.
However, the new location lasted only seven months before closing its doors in March 2024. A statement shared on MOJO’s Instagram said: “It is with a leaden heart that we announce the closure of MOJO Liverpool after fifteen mostly wonderful years.
“No one needs to be reminded of the challenges that face us all in the current climate but suffice it to say we have been forced to make a decision we hoped never to have to.

“We have had many wondrous nights with some of the most extraordinarily warm and welcoming people you could ever wish to meet. Our teams over the years and not least those who leave us today have never failed to be a delight. We will miss them and Liverpool dearly.”
Madre is now set to open its “younger, wilder” sister site concept, Salon Madre, in the Hanover Street unit this winter, promising “everything you already love about Madre, but with the energy cranked up.”
Signage has been posted in the window’s advertising Salon Madre’s food, drink and activity offers. Guests can expect “late nights powered by tequila, pool tables buzzing with action, Lucha Libre screenings, and live sports on the big screens”.

The drinks menu includes a range of frozen, classic and flavoured Margaritas and Palomas, with Mexican street eats like al pastor tacos, gringas, burritos and favourites inspired by the team’s travels.
The Hanover Street site will include three pool tables, three dart boards and several private party spaces. Anyone who signs up to Madre’s newsletter will be rewarded with a free margarita at the launch.
Madre opened on the Royal Albert Dock in 2019 across two floors in the Grade I listed Atlantic Pavilion, seating 100 with a dedicated bar area and courtyard too.
