The Edinburgh Zoo has welcomed a new pair of Bactrian camels, named Quill and Quaver.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) said the brothers are settling in well to their new home in the capital.

“Their personalities are already starting to shine, and visitors can watch the brothers exploring their new home, where they love to energetically trot around,” the RZSS said.

The zoo revealed photos of Quill and Quaver eating hay together in their new habitat at the top of Corstorphine Hill.

Bactrian camels are the only truly wild camels that still exist in the world.

They are over seven feet tall, weigh up to 1,800 pounds, and have two humps rather than the single hump of their Arabian relatives.

In the wild, National Geographic said Bactrian camel herds survive in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia and China.

Their humps store fat, which can be converted into water and energy when sustenance is scarce, and this gives them their legendary ability to endure long periods of travel without water, even in harsh desert conditions.

The camels also have a thick, shaggy coat that protects them in the bitter winter of the Gobi Desert and sheds as the seasons change.

Visitors can now see Quill and Quaver in their habitat at the Edinburgh Zoo.
