A helicopter was deployed to assist the police in Sheffield after the driver of a motorbike fled on foot.

South Yorkshire Police were patrolling the Handsworth area when two motorbikes failed to stop for the police. The National Police Air Service (NPAS) was called to support the pursuit – which took almost an hour – after one of the drivers ditched their vehicle.

A spokesperson from South Yorkshire Police said: “At 10.11 pm last night (Thursday, October 16), our officers were on a proactive patrol in the Handsworth area when two motorbikes reacted to their presence.

“Our officers responded, and the vehicles failed to stop, with one of the riders attempting to flee on foot. The National Police Air Service was requested as support, and one of the riders was detained.

“The vehicle was recovered, and the driver was issued a summons.”

A spokesperson from NPAS said: “At 21:43pm on October 16, 2025, a police helicopter crew from NPAS Barton was deployed to the Sheffield area to support South Yorkshire Police in a search for a suspect vehicle. Our total flying time on the task was 58 minutes.”
