Drivers in England are having £758 added onto their car insurance premiums. Road users in Yorkshire and The Humber are paying the highest bills in the entire country with £1,221 bills – £758 more than the £463 charges motorists in the south west face.
Amy Rootham, an expert at Compare the Market, said: “Many motorists will be delighted that the cost of car insurance is continuing to fall. Drivers should look to take advantage of this by shopping around for a cheaper deal when their policy ends.
“Choosing to auto-renew a policy may lead to motorists missing out on substantial savings.” Yorkshire and The Humber motorists are charged £1,221 for insurance while those road users who live in the capital city London face £1,035 bills.

The charges are high for Greater London – £947 – too, as well as the West Midlands, where drivers face £717 premiums. Cover in the North West costs £663 while costs for Northern Ireland motorists are £622.
Drivers in East of England face £600 bills, East Midlands motorists are charged £558 and East Anglia road users face £549 bills. North East drivers face £529 bills and those in the South East are charged £528.
Motorists in Scotland are charged £527 while costs for those in Wales are £499 and South West drivers are charged £463. The cheapest time to get quotes is 20 to 27 days ahead of your renewal date – cover becomes more expensive the closer you get.
It’s the same if you are buying car insurance for the first time. The timing of your quote can impact the overall price you pay, with car insurance costs increasing the closer you get to your renewal date.
BBC and ITV star Martin Lewis’ team at Money Saving Expert says: “We analysed over one million quotes from MoneySupermarket between January and April 2024 – and found the average quote made on the day of renewal was £2,277, while it was £906 when bought 26 days earlier. That’s a huge difference of £1,371.
“You might not see savings as large as those, but the principle still stands.”
