A major UK supermarket chain is preparing to shut down more than 100 stores, cafés, florists and pharmacies throughout 2025, delivering a significant blow to shoppers.
Morrisons ranks as the fifth largest supermarket chain in the UK and in 2021 operated a total of 497 supermarkets spanning England, Wales and Scotland, plus one outlet in Gibraltar.
During that same period, the retailer employed 110,000 staff members and catered to approximately 11 million customers weekly.
Nevertheless, 2025 will witness the closure of an enormous 103 daily stores, cafés, florists and pharmacies nationwide, stretching from Kent in the south east of England to Somerset and Devon in the west and extending as far north as Scotland.
In Greater Manchester, the company has announced that two locations will be affected, with one store losing its cafe while another will see its indoor dining concept Market Kitchen close.
Most of the 17 daily convenience store closures have already happened, with outlets shutting their doors permanently in April, reports the Express.
Yet the most severe impact lies ahead, as Morrisons has officially confirmed it will close 51 cafés, 13 florists, four pharmacies and all 18 Market Kitchens throughout 2025.
The closure programme was set to be rolled out “over the next few months” following the March 2025 announcement. Certain employees working within these services will be moved to other areas of the business, according to Morrisons.
The supermarket giant stated the reductions were essential as “costs of operations are significantly out of line with usage, volumes or the value that customers place on them”.
Chief executive Rami Baitieh explained: “A minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option.”
