Carragher believes that Man United fans have been left with egg on their faces after slating Amorim’s decision to start Maguire.

The Liverpool legend explained how Amorim spoke about set pieces ahead of the game, and Maguire came up trumps from a ball into the box.

Bruno Fernandes’ corner was reworked back out to him, and he swung in a sumptuous cross which was turned home by the England international.

After Maguire headed home, Carragher exclaimed live on Sky Sports: “Amorim looked like he was getting criticism from United fans for Maguire starting. But Amorim mentioned set pieces before the game. It looks like it has come up trumps.”

Recently, Wayne Rooney called for Maguire to play more and away at Anfield, his experience and quality from set pieces won them the game.

Meanwhile, Gabby Agbonlahor called Maguire United’s ‘best defender’ and he too has been proven right about the 32-year-old.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw tipped to make England’s World Cup squad

Maguire and Luke Shaw have both been tipped to make England’s World Cup squad by TBR Football chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey.

Both players’ experience could prove crucial for Thomas Tuchel’s squad, which is not exactly blessed with many top-class centre-backs.

Speaking about Maguire’s display against Liverpool, Bailey told TBR Football: “People probably don’t acknowledge what a huge season this is for Harry Maguire.

“If he plays well, he would likely earn at least another year from Manchester United, who would have thought that little over 12 months ago?

“If he plays well enough to earn another deal with United, he is surely then in contention for England. Thomas Tuchel is not blessed with too many options, and having someone of Maguire’s experience could be huge.

“Maguire showed at Anfield, not just with his crucial goal, but also with his defending as he cleared everything Liverpool could throw his way, that he is still capable of playing at a very high level.

“And the same can be said of Luke Shaw. Why couldn’t he be in the reckoning for England? I think Tuchel would have been watching this game and been very happy with the English contingent.”
