The 6ft 6in striker took his Toon tally to five goals in a black and white shirt – but now he just wants wins for UnitedNick Woltemade celebrates scoring with teammates Lewis Miley and Jacob Ramsey

Nick Woltemade is making a mockery of his £69million transfer fee with Newcastle United.

For all the questions over the hefty fee that the Magpies paid Stuttgart and rattled Bayern Munich in the process, Woltemade is answering them by bringing goals to Newcastle, much to the dejection of German legends Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness who brutally labelled the 6ft 6in striker overpriced.

But what can’t be denied is that Woltemade is in a rich vein of form for club and country, with five goals in his last five matches for the Magpies and Germany. However, he admits that his latest strike meant little as it did not deliver neither a victory or a solitary point for Newcastle.

Speaking after the 2-1 loss at Brighton, Woltemade said: “It was hard to take. We had situations where we could have scored more, but didn’t. I thought the way we started well in the second half and believed we could have won the game.

“When you work so hard for a goal and when it is a great team goal, then we have the emotion to win the game. Even at 2-1 we thought we could get something.”

Despite the disappointment of losing to the Seagulls, Woltemade and his team-mates can quickly switch their attention to something different with the visit of Benfica and Jose Mourinho in the Champions League at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.

Woltemade said: “If you lose, it is always great to be able to play again three days later. It will be a good moment against Benfica.

“But we had a great week before the international break but now we want to get back to winning ways.”

However, Woltemade feels that Newcastle’s inability to string two decent halves of football together are costing them dear as they sit below Sunderland in the table.

The German star said: “It’s not good. In the first half, we didn’t do so good. The second half brought us good energy in the game.

“We scored one goal and it felt like we would win but they played good and scored. That’s football sometimes. The second half was way better than the first.”

One of the recurring themes around Woltemade’s move to Newcastle has been the lack of good service to the centre-forward.

Head coach Eddie Howe switched things at half-time against Brighton, hauling off Anthony Elanga and replacing him with Jacob Murphy. It helped spark Newcastle into life, although it was another half-time substitute, Lewis Miley, who provided the assist for the German’s goal.

Newcastle are still figuring out how to get the best out of Woltemade, and vice versa, but the 23-year-old insists the truth is that he is happy with the service so far.

He said: “I really like to play here. I get balls; the players are looking for me. The gaffer trusts me.

“In the second half, we had good chances, but we lost them in the first half. We didn’t have good energy. It’s part of football when the ball doesn’t want to go in, but it’s important we keep working on that.

“Before the national break, we had a good week and today you can see that we can get the game on our side in away games. We will keep working and win games away.”

Howe, meanwhile, spoke of his delight at Woltemade’s impact so far and knows even better is to come from his centre-forward, who has hit the ground running with five goals for the club in just six starts.

The Toon boss said: “There is a level of expectation there because we’re signing a very good player. There’s a lot to take on with a new league and a new lifestyle but he’s taken that on very well.”
