16 businesses in Nottinghamshire have been fined by the government for underpaying their staff, with some workers owed thousands.

Companies in Sherwood, Hyson Green, Mansfield and West Bridgford are among those named and shamed in a list of nearly 500 employers across the country which failed to pay staff the minimum wage.

The government has fined businesses across the UK a total of £10m for underpaying workers as it says it “will not tolerate rogue employers who short-change their staff”.

Among the Nottinghamshire businesses fined by the government, many are nurseries and care service providers, with the worst offenders in the county being The Human Support Group.

The company – which provides home care to elderly and disabled people across the UK – failed to pay more than £25,000 to 27 workers.

Many notable long-standing companies across the county have also been named and shamed in the government’s list, published on Friday (October 17), including J.T Beedham and Sons.

The company – which runs the well-loved Johnny Pusztai’s ‘Snobby Butchers’ in Sherwood – failed to pay more than £3,700 to two workers.

Many of the companies listed appear to have entered liquidation or have closed in recent months.

Business Secretary, Peter Kyle, said: “Every worker deserves a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, and this government will not tolerate rogue employers who short-change their staff.

“I know that no employer wants to end up on one of these lists. But our Plan to Make Work Pay cracks down on those not playing by the rules.

“This ensures a level playing field where all businesses pay what they owe whilst workers receive the boost to their living standards they deserve.”
