More than 21,700 trips have been taken by more than 5,800 riders on the city’s new e-bikes provided by Voi since they were introduced.
The cyclists have covered almost 60,000 kilometres in the city, but now the cycle hire company is ramping up the number of bikes and the area in which they will operate.
From 31 October there will be around 340 e-bikes in total available for hire.
The boundary (which is geo-fenced to guard against theft) will be extended west to include Holyrood Park and Meadowbank and further north taking in Bonnington, Leith and Newhaven. It is planned to roll out the cycle hire scheme to the remainder of the city before the end of the year.
Transport and Environment Convener, Councillor Stephen Jenkinson said: “I’m delighted that we’re moving to the next phase of expanding our cycle hire scheme. The figures we’ve seen speak for themselves in terms of uptake, with hundreds of journeys being made across our city each and every day.
“I’ve no doubt that the scheme will continue to go from strength to strength and before long everyone in Edinburgh will be able to take advantage of this accessible, affordable, and sustainable way of getting around.
“Our wider commitment to making our city a better place for everyone is evidenced in our ambitious City Mobility Plan alongside our commitment to tackling the climate emergency.”
