Strand House is a half-timbered, Grade II listed building with links dating all the way back to the 13th century. The hotel boasts a rather lengthy backstory, having started its life as a farmhouse before going on to become a brothel (allegedly), a hospital inhabited by monks, and a workhouse. It wasn’t until 1922 that it was converted into a guesthouse, when two sisters snapped up the property.

Boasting low ceilings, wooden beams, winding pathways, and ‘bendy staircases’, Stand House is filled to the brim with history, charm, and eerie eccentricities. It’s been the site of plenty of supernatural sightings over the years, with one particular Tripadvisor review by ‘@FireflyManchester’ reading: “The Strand House, which I’ve staying in several times under different owners, is a magnificent hotel. The rooms, service, food and location are all superb. And for those interested in the supernatural, it has the added value of several active ghosts! I once saw a full-blown apparition at the bottom of the stairs and have often heard footsteps walking around my bed in the dead of the night.”

The oh-so spooky Strand House hotel is approximately a two hour drive from London. But non-drivers, fear not. You can still get your frightful fix by hopping on a speedy train from London to Ashford International, where you can change to an onward train to Winchelsea.
