Ikea is joining the list of retailers making closures across the UK. The Swedish flat-pack giant has confirmed its Order and Collection store in Wellington Circle, Aberdeen, is earmarked for closure.
The store, which has been open for nearly 10 years, opening May 2016, becoming the only branch based in Northern Scotland, meaning shoppers did not have to travel to Glasgow or Edinburgh to buy homeware items.
Ikea said on its website that its Order and Collection stores are “much smaller than our usual stores”, designed to offer the same range and inspiration, with most products available to order and collect, reports the Express.
“There is also a small range of products available to take home today. Or if it’s more convenient, you can have it all delivered to your door,” it adds.
The Aberdeen branch, which opened its doors in May 2016, was the first of its kind in northern Scotland. It provided locals with the opportunity to explore their popular Scandinavian designs without having to travel to Edinburgh or Glasgow.
While the store is set to close permanently, Ikea has assured that it is exploring other options in the area. In a statement, the company said: “We can confirm that we’ve taken the decision to close our Order and Collection Point in Aberdeen.
“Our commitment to the city remains and we’re currently exploring new locations in the area.”
Despite the closure, Ikea maintains a strong presence in Scotland, with stores in Edinburgh and Glasgow and a new Plan and Order Point set to open in Dundee soon.
The company did not provide further details regarding the reason for the closure or when it will occur.
At present, there are 22 Ikea outlets scattered across the UK, in addition to several pick-up points.
