Many people dream of relocating overseas, but one British mum has discovered an unexpected bonus having relocated to sunny Spain. It turns out that moving to Spain is not just about a more agreeable climate, a more relaxed life and delicious cuisine. Mum Jodie Marlow says she has been floored by the decrease in her family’s monthly outgoings.

Jodie, who goes by @jodiemar1ow on TikTok, is recognised for sharing her experiences as a mum who has moved to Spain, and she recently discussed her household expenses. It appears there’s a substantial difference regarding what she’s spending to maintain a home.

One video, in which she explained how the cost of running a Spanish household differed, left many viewers astonished. In the video, she clarified they don’t need to cover any rental or mortgage payments as they own their home outright.

But she acknowledged the electricity costs – which can cost British homes hundreds – are also “really good” having recently switched providers. Jodie said: “Oh my gosh, amazing.

“Last month, before I really put the aircon on, was €37 (£30.82). This month I’ve had the aircon on nearly every night for the boys and, I think when I tried to look quickly because it’s not generated fully, it’s around €55 to €60 (around £45.82), which I think is nothing.”

“So, if anyone lives in Spain and pays their own electricity bills, you need to message me. I can’t believe how cheap it’s changed to.”

She added: “Water is around €99 (£82.47) every three months, so that’s €33 (£27.49) every month. The house actually runs off a gas bottle. I thought it was really weird at first but, actually, it’s pretty normal in Spain, and a gas bottle costs around €16 (£13.33).”

During warmer weather, Jodie explained that many residents avoid hot showers, meaning usage drops considerably at certain times of year. She rarely relies on the gas hob either, preferring to use her outdoor barbecue alongside an air fryer to maximise her cooking options.

In a good month, the gas cylinder can sustain the household for approximately three months. She estimates council tax at roughly €21 (£17.49) monthly, which she considers quite reasonable, whilst her home insurance costs a similar amount.

Since Jodie posted the clip, it has garnered hundreds of views, with viewers expressing disbelief at her remarkably affordable utility costs. Numerous people shared their reactions in the comments section.

One person commented: “60 Euros a month! We spend £40 per week for a four-bed house in England.”

Another responded: “Oh my god, your electric is so cheap. Ours is so much more!”.

A third viewer also noted: “So cheap. My gas and electric is £250 together, and my council tax is like £180 a month.”
