Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen were chosen by the public and respectively scored 97, 93 and 84.

The travel magazine hailed Aberdeen as a “bustling” port city.

The publication said: “It’s the people who really bring Aberdeen to life, as its relatively small population has a heart-warming community feel compared to the larger cities on our list.

“Wander the silvery granite streets, a remnant of its industrial powerhouse past, and hear the soft tones of Doric conservation, Aberdeen’s charming local dialect.”

Glasgow was hailed for being a social hub and for knowing how to party.

The magazine continued: “Think of cool cocktail bars, historic boozers, and, the cherry on top, legendary music venues, which have given rise to Glasgow’s Unesco City of Music status.”

And regarding Edinburgh, Condé Nast Traveller added: “The Scottish capital is good-humoured, open-minded, and pulsing with creative energy, while widespread patriotism means that all are eager to provide superb standards of hospitality as well.”

Other cities, including Liverpool and Manchester, also made the shortlist.

Elsewhere, Paisley was crowned as Scotland’s Town of the Year.

Judges awarded the title after being impressed by the town’s “resurgence” and investment in its future.

It comes as new businesses open, new homes are built, and a new state-of-the-art secondary school.

Elsewhere, Paisley Museum has been transformed and is due to reopen next year.

Kimberley Guthrie, Chief Officer of awards organisers Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP), said: “Incredibly special things are happening in Paisley.

“The town is on a remarkable journey of reinvention and rejuvenation, which has evolved over the past decade, kick-started by major cultural regeneration.”
