Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has insisted that Manchester United did not make the game too difficult for his team in their 4-2 defeat on Saturday.

United were good value for their 2-0 lead at half time after Matheus Cunha’s curling effort and Casemiro’s deflected strike. When Bryan Mbeumo made it 3-0 in the second half it seemed that the result was only going one way.

However, Danny Welbeck’s free kick and Charalampos Kostoulas’ header in added time set up a nervy finish. But Mbeumo’s second in front of the Stretford End ensured the victory.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Hurzeler was asked if United, who produced another good display, made the game too difficult for Brighton, but the German ruled that out. “I wouldn’t say that they made it too difficult, we had a good plan but it just came down to execution.

“Our idea was the right one but it is about positioning, being on the right foot and having the right positioning towards the opponent. Finding the right teammate with the right man – that is something we lacked today so we are responsible for that defeat and we have to be honest to ourselves and we have to be better.”

Moments before Welbeck pulled one back for the visitors, Patrick Dorgu looked like he could be shown a straight red card when he brought down Yankuba Minteh when one-on-one with Senne Lammens. Referee Anthony Taylor brandished a yellow card and a VAR check ensured that decision stood.

When quizzed about the call, Hurzeler added: “No [Patrick Dorgu shouldn’t have got the red card]. They explained to me the rule so we have to accept the rule and that was not the reason why we lost.”
