If you grew up with the PS1, you’ll remember Battle Arena Toshinden.
Whether you actually owned one of the 3D brawlers or not, we bet you’ll have examined its box on store shelves. It’s a pretty iconic series from the 32-bit PlayStation era.
And now it’s set to make a comeback, courtesy of Tokyo-based dev Edia, who’s licensed the intellectual property from owner Takara Tomy.
While it hasn’t announced specific platform plans, it says it aims to bring all three PS1 titles to “modern” consoles, which will almost certainly include the PS5. This, it should be stressed, will be separate from Sony’s own emulation efforts.
Edia has a good track record when it comes to porting retro games, so you can expect modern conveniences to be bundled in and solid emulation across the board.
The original Battle Arena Toshinden was a PS1 launch game, you may recall, and was pegged as a rival to SEGA Saturn’s Virtua Fighter 2 at the time.
It’d eventually go on to be overshadowed by Tekken in the PS1 3D fighter space, but it still served as a very early indication of what Sony’s new console could achieve.
We’ll be interested to play the trilogy again, which Edia says will release somewhere between fiscal year 2026 and 2027.
We hope the developer includes lots of supplementary materials as well, like the series’ manga and anime adaptations, which would be cool as unlockable extras.
