Benny Martin was buried today in St John’s Cemetery in the Co Tyrone village, following his funeral Mass this afternoon at St Peter’s Church in the neighbouring Collegeland area – which is just beside the Moy in Co Armagh.

A death notice for Mr Martin said he passed away peacefully at Craigavon Area Hospital on Thursday, October 24, with his loving family by his side.

A lifelong resident of Charlemont Road – where the Martin family’s funeral home is also located – Mr. Martin was a familiar and trusted figure in the region as the face of Benedict J. Martin & Son.

The family business established by his late father in 1950 has long been an integral part of the local community.

Benny was the devoted husband of Maura, cherished father of Benedict and Maria, father-in-law of Stephen, and proud grandfather to Dara and Jude, his death notice read.

He was also the beloved son of the late Benny and Anna Martin, and brother to Mary (Ashford), Francis, Sean, and the late Eugene.

Since news of his death, heartfelt tributes have been made to the late Mr Martin. One mourner wrote:

“Heartbroken to hear the sad news of a great gentleman who will be sadly missed. R.I.P. Benny — you were one in a million. Condolences to the family at this sad time.”

Others remembered him simply as “a true gentleman” and “a wonderful character.”

One neighbour described him as “a decent man” and “a great character who will be missed”.

The committee and members of Collegeland O’Rahillys Gaelic football club stated that they “deeply regret the passing of Benedict (Benny) Martin”.

“Benny, former player and long time supporter, he participated in our Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser in 2014,” they added.

“Benny’s father was also Chairman in 1961, overseeing our Senior Championship win.

“To the entire Martin family circle, we at the club extend our deepest sympathy.”
