Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has now had his say on multiple calls that were made during Manchester United’s win over Brighton at Old Trafford.

Manchester United fans felt that the Red Devils should have been awarded a penalty during the Premier League match on Saturday after Amad Diallo was brought down.

Brighton full-back Maxim De Cuyper pulled down Amad Diallo and United players demanded a penalty, but the Red Devils’ call for a spot-kick effort was dismissed.

Dermot Gallagher has now reacted to referee Anthony Taylor not pointing to the spot and believes that there was one reason why the penalty was not awarded.

“Refs have been consistent for weeks now, with [Nick] Pope and [Viktor] Gyokeres and [Bukayo] Saka and Kevin – if you get a touch on the ball, they are not going to give a penalty,” he said on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch.

Bryan Mbeumo put Manchester United 3-0 up against Brighton in the second half at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils comfortably leading the clash at the time.

However, Luke Shaw was spotted tugging on the shirt of Brighton’s Georginio Rutter in the build-up, but Anthony Taylor did not step in and deem the incident as a foul.

VAR did not overturn the decision in United’s 4-2 win over Brighton either and Gallagher agrees with the stance that Premier League referee Taylor took in the tie.

“Play on,” Gallagher said.

“He gets a feel of the player. But is it enough? Referee has best position and he says no. VAR says no as well.

“They are probably the two best referees in the world.”

Dermot Gallagher’s reaction to Patrick Dorgu’s ‘controversial’ incident in Man Utd’s Premier League clash against Brighton

Patrick Dorgu came off the bench in the second half in United’s encounter with Brighton and replaced Amad Diallo for the remainder of Saturday’s match.

However, the 21-year-old Danish full-back almost found himself in hot water and came close to receiving his marching orders after his challenge on Yankuba Minteh.

Yankuba Minteh was brought down during a Brighton counterattack and Taylor brandished a yellow card for Patrick Dorgu, despite some pleas for a red card.

However, Gallagher has shut down the idea that Dorgu should have been sent off after claiming that Minteh was not in control of the ball during the incident.

“This is 100 per cent not a red card, everybody in the world knows,” he said

“Two criteria: Is he in possession of the ball? No, because his first touch is so heavy.

“Is he likely to gain control of the ball? 100 per cent not because it has run through to the ‘keeper.”

United picked up their third consecutive Premier League win under Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim and have now climbed to sixth place in the table.
