The Daily Record is 130 years old today. It is worth recalling how Scotland’s Champion has proudly told the country’s story for more than a century.

We were there when the UK fought and won two world wars.

We were there when we built the peace together through the creation of the NHS and the welfare state.

Our readers were foremost in our minds when we opposed Thatcherism and supported the creation of the Scottish Parliament.

When Scotland cried over Dunblane, Piper Alpha and Lockerbie, the Record brought you the news with compassion.

Another constant over the past 130 years has been first class sports coverage.

Whether it was Celtic winning the European Cup or Rangers and Aberdeen bringing home the Cup Winners’ Cup, the Record was there for it all.

And no one has reported the ups and downs – admittedly, mostly the latter – of Scotland’s men’s national team better.

We were there when we defeated England at Wembley in 1967 and lost ourselves in Argentina 11 years later.

We reported Sandy Lyle’s amazing triumph at the Masters, Andy Murray winning Wimbledon and Chris Hoy ripping up the Olympics.

We keep up our levels of first-class journalism to the present day too. Our scoop on MSP Colin Smyth and claims of a secret camera in a Holyrood toilet sent shockwaves around the political world.

The paper’s campaign on drugs shone a light on the national disgrace of the number of people who lose their lives to illegal substances, and the Our Kids…Our Future campaign has received plaudits for revealing the ugly truth of the violence in Scotland’s schools.

We have always been on the side of hard-working Scots who want a better life for themselves and their kids.

We have always stood up for fairness and condemned injustice whenever it reared its head.

The Record has also never been a paper to rest on its laurels.

Our printed newspaper pioneered full colour printing decades before rivals, and we embraced the digital world with gusto too.

Today more people than ever read, watch and hear the Record.

In this age of extremism and social media-fuelled disinformation, it’s vital Scotland’s biggest news provider is here to give people the news they need.

Some Scots are increasingly mistrustful of media outlets and choose instead to consume news from unreliable sources.

But the Record has always been a bastion of accuracy. This will never change.

We have been proud to serve Scotland – and look forward to the next 130 years.
