Good Morning Britain was halted to share some heartbreaking news after a natural disaster has hit a major country. A devastating Category 5 storm has hit the Caribbean, with reports now confirming Hurricane Melissa has claimed at least seven lives.

This includes three people dead in Jamaica, a further three killed in Haiti and one person killed in the Dominican Republic, where another individual is still said to be missing.

The hurricane is set to make landfall early this morning in Jamaica (October 28), with residents and tourists having been preparing for the harsh weather.

At least 200 Brits are known to be in the country confined to their hotels until at least Wednesday.

Ed Balls and Charlotte Hawkins hosted the ITV show this morning, which came to a halt as Liz Summers told viewers of the devastating news.

She said: “It is a slow moving giant. The eye of Hurricane Melissa appears peaceful, but it’s bringing winds of up to 175mph and torrential rain, threatening Jamaica with deadly flooding and landslides.

“Those on the island are preparing as best they can, knowing the impact could be catastrophic.”

A tourist currently in Jamaica also shared the distress they have faced following instructions given to them to stack mattresses in front of windows and lock themselves in the bathroom until Wednesday.

Andrew Tracey said: “It’s one of the hardest things speaking to family members and trying to remain strong, having no idea yourself what exactly is going to happen.”

The Foreign Office has also issued an update regarding the current situation, the Express reported.

A spokesperson said: “It is expected to bring exceptional levels of rainfall to the whole of Jamaica. There are estimates for up to 700mm of rain, storm surges around coastal areas bringing waves of up to 4 metres, and winds of up to 135mph.

“Catastrophic flash floods and landslides are likely.”
