The Great British Bake Off‘s semi-final technical challenge has ended in disaster, with most of the remaining contestants turning in “car crash” cakes in a show first. Despite the four bakers being just one week away from the 2025 final, three of them struggled massively with this week’s technical challenge of making a Framboisier.

Tonight’s episode saw Aaron, Jasmine, Toby and Tom compete for a spot in next week’s final, but only one of them came out unscathed after the technical challenge. Judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood challenged them with making a pistachio mousseline filled with fresh raspberries and sandwiched between two delicate sponges and topped with a fondant flower and crystal sugar dome in the challenge.

However, all of them except for Jasmine were left with calamitous bakes. Toby’s framboisier completely fell apart and was reduced to a puddle, while Aaron’s also collapsed. As for Tom and Jasmine, their framboisiers were lacking the crystal dome that was asked for.

Prue and Paul, who were left speechless initially, later ruled the challenge as a disaster. “The technical was a bit of a surprise,” Prue said.

“We had a couple of disasters there.” While Paul said: “Jasmine is the only one in a fairly safe position.”

Ultimately, it was Toby who was eliminated, with Jasmine winning Star Baker and the others making it to the final. However, fans were shocked by just how chaotic the technical was at this stage of the competition.

“That’s the first car crash technical ever #GBBO,” one fan wrote on X. Another said: “Sugar domes were absent in tenfold. And one of them didn’t even survive.

“Hey ho, well done to Jasmine, the winner of that technical challenge. Looks like the showstopper will have to decide everything. #GBBO.”

A third said: “So we’re looking for least-bad rather than best, aren’t we? #GBBO.” A fourth said: “3 cake flavoured soups there basically… #gbbo.”

A fourth wrote: “Every single SEMI FINALIST completely messing up the technical just goes to show how stupidly difficult and fast the producers make these challenges!!!!! #GBBO.”

Speaking about his exit, Toby said: “It’s tough to comeback from serving a puddle of mousseline…I had good comeback today … It’s the good bits that I find hard to talk about.

“The best thing of being in the tent is definitely the people. The handshake was good, the Star Baker was good, but yeah the people were the best bit.”

The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays from 8pm on Channel 4.
