The M53 motorway is closed in Merseyside tonight (Tuesday, October 28) due to an ongoing police incident.
The northbound carriageway is shut to traffic between J5 (Hooton) and J4 (Bebington) while Merseyside Police remain at the scene.
The closure was first reported at around 11.17pm.
A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M53 northbound is currently closed between J5 (Hooton) and J4 (Bebington) due to a Merseyside Police–led incident. National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene assisting with traffic management. There is currently no significant congestion reported on approach.
“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

M53 traffic diversion route:
Motorists are being asked to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol. Leave M53 northbound at Jct 5.
At M53 Jct 5/A41 roundabout, take the first exit onto A41 southbound New Chester Road for 0.7 km. At A41/B5133 junction, turn right onto B5133 westbound Hooton Road for 4.2 km.
At B5133/B5151 junction, turn right onto B5151 northbound Birkenhead Road for 5.7 km. At M53 Jct 4/A5137 roundabout, take the second exit and rejoin the M53 northbound at Jct 4
