Leeds are considering a move for Haji Wright in January.
Sources have informed Leeds United News that Wright is being scouted ahead of a potential swoop in the winter transfer window – the American has impressively started the season with nine goals in just 13 games for Coventry.
Should Leeds firm up their interest in Wright, he has a very close friend who can offer plenty of advice about a switch to Elland Road in Weston McKennie.
Weston McKennie has already given Haji Wright a strong character reference as 49ers consider move
The Texan made 20 appearances for Leeds while on loan from Juventus in the 2022/23 campaign, but failed to impress as the Whites were relegated.
Nevertheless, McKennie and Wright go way back, adding an interesting dimension to the story.
The pair made 34 appearances alongside each other for three different teams – the Schalke U19 side, Schalke and also the United States – combining for one goal.
McKennie – who learned from his time at Leeds – seems to idolise Wright, previously telling the official Bundesliga website: “He’s one of the guys that if you keep pushing, keep giving him confidence, you’ll see what type of player he is.”

ESPN also quote the Juventus No.22 with some praise for the Leeds target.
MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES
In May 2022 – after Wright earned a call into the United States side – McKennie said: “I think it’s beautiful… I think just for him, finding his own path to get back in here is definitely one that’s inspirational and something that I can kind of relate to. It’s wonderful and exciting just to see him in here, and kind of sharing the same story at the same time.”
January could be the only chance Leeds get to sign Haji Wright
This deal is an ambitious one for several reasons – in our view – and January might be the only realistic window for Leeds to wrap up an agreement.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held in the United States – Wright’s homeland – meaning he could see his value absolutely soar if he turns out to be a star of the tournament.
Furthermore, his value could soar regardless if he helps Coventry seal promotion to the Premier League – they currently sit three points clear at the summit.
However, the January window – of course – falls before either of these potentialities could happen, so if Leeds really are sold on Wright, the winter transfer window may represent a now or never scenario.
