A security alert in west Belfast has concluded after police discovered a viable device during a search operation.

The PSNI’s Inspector Curry said officers were conducting a search in the Glenalina Gardens area of Belfast when they found a suspicious object.

Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) were called to the scene to examine the item, which was subsequently declared a viable device. It has been taken away for further forensic examination.

As a precaution, a number of local residents were evacuated from their homes while the security operation was carried out. Police have thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during the incident.

Inspector Curry added: “We would appeal to anyone with any information in relation to the incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1598 – 28/10/25.”

Earlier on Wednesday, local Sinn Féin councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly noted that the security alert has been “causing serious disruption today, with residents being evacuated from their homes following the discovery of a suspicious device.

“With children off school for the Halloween break, this has been particularly disruptive for families who’ve had to leave their homes at short notice.

“Whiterock Community Centre has opened its doors to anyone needing somewhere to go, and I want to thank staff there for once again stepping up for the local community.

“I’ve been in contact with police and hope the situation can be resolved quickly so people can return home safely.

“In the meantime, I would urge people to avoid the area.”

Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Paul Doherty, added that “no one should have to put up with this”.

“The ongoing security alert in the Glenalina Gardens area has forced families – including many with children on their half-term break, to leave their homes. It’s unacceptable that people are once again being put through fear and disruption in their own community,” he continued.

“Those responsible for causing this disruption need to understand the real impact their actions have. People don’t want this nonsense.”
