A broken down vehicle along a congested road in Sheffield left locals divided on the quality of parking
Locals have been left divided on whether the free parking along Clun Street is positive or detrimental
A breakdown along a ‘packed’ Sheffield road boasting free parking has divided residents – with some arguing it’s worth the ‘hassle’ to keep parking for free.
Yesterday (October 28) a silver Toyota Yaris had the misfortune of breaking-down in the middle of Clun Street, Sheffield.
An employee from Burngreave Building Company explained that the car had unfortunately received a flat tyre and was unable to move, causing a brief blockage.

Due to the car being stuck on the opposite side of the road, witnesses posting to Facebook explained that many drivers were “forced to drive backwards” up the steep hill.
The post opened the floodgates under the initial Facebook post, made to Sheffield Online – with some furious at the number of badly parked cars that seemed to line the street – arguing that people were “not sticking to parking restrictions” in the area.
However, the feedback was very mixed when YorkshireLive journalists went to visit the area.
One local – who frequently parks their car in the area for work – explained that her car had been scratched by passing binmen due to how “tight and narrow” the road became when flooded with parked cars.

Yet some argued it was simply the price locals paid for free parking, without needing permits.
A resident who did not wish to be named said: “Everywhere in Sheffield it seems you have to pay for parking but here there is lots. On this street (Clun Street) as well as the free parking around the corner and down Gower street – all free. It’s really helpful to be honest, and it feels safe.”
Locals have taken to parking on pavements to get out of the way of other cars
The resident added that it was just about “considering others” saying: “Just look out for your own car and make sure it is not in the way. It helps everyone and makes sure we can still have the free parking.”
Currently, their is few yellow lines in place ton prevent parking on either side of the street. Sheffield City Council have been contacted for a comment regarding parking in the congested area.
