Drivers are facing delays on the M20 this evening due to a car fire.

The motorway was shut London-bound between Junction 9 for Ashford and Junction 8 for Hollingbourne.

National Highways warned drivers to expect delays in the area.

The fire service was called to the scene and a spokesman said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a vehicle fire between junction 8 and 9 on the M20 London bound near Lenham, Maidstone

“Two fire engines attended and crews, wearing breathing apparatus, used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

“There are no reported injuries and the cause is not yet known.”

At 8.02pm, posting on X, National Highways said: “Fire extinguished, recovery and clear-up complete, #M20 westbound between J9 #Ashford and J8 #Hollingbourne is OPEN.

“Thank you for your patience, delays are clearing quickly.”
