October has been a busy month of outdoor filming for the Harry Potter series. The John Lithgow, Nick Frost, and Paapa Essiedu-starring TV series was filmed at multiple locations in Cornwall and Yorkshire. Fans also got their first glimpse of John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, along with several other characters.

Harry Potter Filming at Cadgwith

The series was filmed at Cadgwith on October 7. The scene filmed featured the Dursleys and Harry. The scene saw Vernon Dursley at the bay with his family and Harry, trying to secure a boat and a gun, which he manages to buy from an old fisherman. The scene was filmed in simulated rain for dramatic effect. Harry Potter star Dominic McLaughlin was not present, but his double Isaac Geut took his place as Harry.

In the book, the Dursleys take Harry to a shack on a remote rock in the sea to escape the flood of letters from Hogwarts. The family travels there by small rowboat, but when Hagrid arrives, he flies to the island and, along with Harry, uses the same boat to return to the mainland, leaving the Dursleys behind. The scene filmed at Cadgwith Cove is very likely part of this subplot.

Filming at Kynance Cove

Filming at Kynance Cove took place over two days, on October 7 and 8. Although the initial photos by locals did not reveal anything interesting, the paparazzi photos gave us the first glimpse of John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore

The scene filmed involved Dumbledore casting a spell to reveal something. The spell “Natura nihil creat, omnia patefacit, posse natura constituit” translates to ‘Let the wall fall and the way be clear.’ Although it may seem like Dumbledore is trying to part the sea with the spell, photos from the scene reveal that he’s using the spell to reveal the entrance to Flamel’s residence.

Later, multiple scenes of Albus Dumbledore with the Flamels were filmed. One scene featured Dumbledore and the Flamel family sitting on the cliff edge, having a conversation.

Another scene involving the Flamels and Dumbledore was filmed at the beach.

In the book, Dumbledore met with Nicolas Flamel to discuss the safety of the Philosopher’s Stone because he was concerned about the rising dark forces that might target it. Dumbledore invited Flamel to Hogwarts, under the guise of a lecture, to get Flamel’s permission to move the stone from Gringotts to Hogwarts for better protection. It’s possible that in the series, the very same meeting happens at the Flamel residence. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the Flamels lived in Devon, Cornwall.

Filming at Trago Mills

John Lithgow (Albus Dumbledore) was seen filming at Trago Mills, Liskeard on October 13. Not much is known about the filming and the cast who filmed there.

Filming at Lustleigh

Filming at Lustleigh was a big event for the village because the production had completely taken over the laid-back village, and for one week it was the most happening place in Devon. Very early on the fans knew the village stood for Godric’s Hollow as the production started putting up signs and started changing the shop fronts.

Multiple scenes are believed to have been filmed in the village. Plenty of 90s era cars were seen parked in a local parking lot to be used for filming

One of the scenes filmed was of kids and adults dressed in Halloween costumes going trick or treating.

The scene filmed seems to be the night James and Lily Potter were killed. In the book, James and Lily lived in Godric’s Hollow when they were killed by Voldemort

Filming in Skipton

Filming moved to Yorkshire on the fourth week of October. Plenty of streets were closed for filming for almost a week, causing mild inconvenience to the residents living there. Filming here mostly took place at night. None of the lead actors were present for the filming.

The scene filmed involved a wizard casting spells from the roof of a house. Fans have suggested that the wizard is possibly celebrating the death of Voldemort.

Actress Rachel Wooding was seen at the location in a blonde wig. We aren’t sure who she is playing in the series.

Filming at Malham Rakes

The series filmed at Malham Rakes in Yorkshire on October 22-23. The location is famous and has been used in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.

According to a local, filming took place at multiple locations including three different spots around Malham Cove and also at Gordale Scar with a second unit working simultaneously. A short scene of a witch casting a spell into the air and whooping, similar to the scene filmed on the chimney top in Skipton was filmed at the location.
