Against the backdrop of ongoing aggression by Russia, Germany is once again stepping up its defence, demonstrating a willingness to play a leading role in European security.

According to media reports, including The Telegraph, these processes are reflected in wide-ranging changes to the country’s defence policy.

As part of reforms initiated by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Berlin this year scrapped most restrictions on defence spending, aiming to create one of the most powerful armies on the continent.

Under this programme, Berlin is focusing on equipment purchases and modernisation of the army’s infrastructure, designed to strengthen the protection of the country and its allies.

“The reform opened the way to massive purchases of tanks, artillery, fighter jets, and warships worth hundreds of billions of pounds – the Bundeswehr is preparing to stand up to the threat posed by Vladimir Putin”

The changes demonstrate Germany’s determination to bolster its defence capabilities and respond to new geopolitical challenges, the authors of the piece note.

According to Ukrinform, in the coming days Ukraine could receive two Patriot surface-to-air missile systems that Germany has pledged to provide to its allies.
