The bridge will reopen from 10pm tonight

Runcorn’s Silver Jubilee Bridge has been closed all day with traffic diverted to the Mersey Gateway, The bridge that links Runcorn and Widnes shut at 6am today, Sunday, with closures in place until 10pm.

The bridge has been closed to traffic as pyrotechnics experts set up the annual firework display. The display has been brought forward from the traditional November 5 date to give more people the chance to see it.

Fireworks will begin at 7pm.

The occasion sees thousands of people gather on the banks of the River Mersey in Runcorn and Widnes to watch the display.

The pedestrian footpath on the bridge will be closed between 6pm and 8pm because of the fireworks but has been open as usual throughout the day.

Traffic monitor INRIX currently says: “A557 Silver Jubilee Bridge in both directions closed due to preparations for the fireworks display from West Bank Street to A558 Bridgewater Expressway.”

The breath-taking fireworks display will be launched from the bridge itself.

Car access into West Bank will be restricted to residents only.
