There’s another big twist planned on Emmerdale, and the co-stars didn’t have a clue about it until their scripts dropped.
It’s safe to say Ryan Hawley and Chris Coghill were shocked by it, not having been told the twist by bosses in advance. The pair feature in a special standalone episode next week as their characters Robert Sugden and Chris Coghill.
Amid recent episodes seeing their marriage spark drama with Robert’s soulmate Aaron Dingle, sparking yet another split, we’re about to find out all about them getting together it seems. Speaking to The Mirror, the actors hinted their marriage and their time in prison together would all be explained.
The episode will see flashbacks across Robert’s six years in prison, seemingly focusing on 2021 onwards. We finally find out just what went on while Robert was locked up, with his trauma only hinted at so far.
It’s been teased the episode will reveal new details and feature unexpected twists, while Chris and Ryan hinted that their storyline could have a “dramatic climax”. Ryan also hinted there was a familiar theme with the scenes, reminiscent of another special episode he did in the past.

Of the episode, Ryan said: “It’s kind of interesting to not know. It’s obviously a scripted, kind of dramatisation of what happened during that time.” Chris added: “It’s nice for us to find out. People kept saying, when we first started, what happened in prison?”
On being kept in the dark about everything, including having a husband, Robert actor Ryan shared: “We didn’t know. So I didn’t know I had a husband in prison and then someone on set was like, ‘oh, yeah, your husband is coming into it’.
“I was like, what? To have this kind of flashback, it’s lovely to have that whole episode to kind of get to tell a story. There’s one particularly very nice little twist that neither of us knew about until I read the script.
“I remember reading it like and I was like, whoa, because no one had told me that was something that had happened, and it is massively pivotal. As far as we know, no one finds out about it so there are some interesting things that they’re sewing in this episode for things potentially leading forward.”

So it seems characters will be kept in the dark over whatever it is viewers find out. Chris said fans would learn more about Kev and Robert’s relationship too.
He shared: “It explains a lot about my psyche towards what I expect from him. There’s a thing that leads into that flashback episode which explains a lot about how our relationship [started] in the first place.”
Ryan is happy with the episode, and teased what fans can expect. He shared: “It’s very informative. It kind of explains a lot about the relationship. There’s nice scenes in it. This isn’t the first time I’ve had an episode where… there was the the one where I was in the coma, there was a particular thematic convention that was introduced in that episode, that is also in this episode.”

Ryan also revealed to reflect the different periods of time during the episode, his character Robert has different hairstyles. He explained: “The episode goes from 2021 to all the way up until right before Aaron and John’s wedding. It’s at several different points throughout that time period.
“There are some different looks. All me. It’s all me. There’s no hair doubles or wigs. I do all my own hair. So yeah, it’s like, there’s a couple of different hairstyles, I think.” Teasing how things could end further down the line, Ryan said: “I think it’s leading to a climax…” with Chris adding: “Something very dramatic. But we can’t say.”
