A man who died after being seriously injured following a suspected hit and run has been named by police as 69-year-old Patrick Flanagan.

It comes as police said they are continuing to investigate the incident and again appealed for information.

Mr Flanagan – from the Derry area – was found seriously injured near Dungiven in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He later passed away in hospital.

SDLP MLA Cara Hunter said the local community has been left in shock following the incident.

“My heart goes out to the family and friends of the man who has tragically lost his life,” she said.

“It’s concerning that police believe this may have been a hit and run and I would urge anyone with information to come forward.”

Sinn Fein MLA Caoimhe Archibald said: “This is a tragedy and my thoughts are with the loved ones of the man who lost his life.

“I would urge anyone with information to come forward to the PSNI and assist with the investigation.”

Alliance councillor Amy Mairs said: “Every death on our roads is a tragedy, and it’s deeply upsetting to hear of yet another person losing their life in this way.

“My thoughts and sympathies are with the man’s family and loved ones at what will no doubt be an unbelievably difficult time.”

PSNI Detective Inspector Gillian Connolly, from the Criminal Investigation Department said: “Police received a report at approximately 1.35am on Sunday morning that an injured man had been found in the Foreglen Road area.

“Officers attended, alongside colleagues from partner emergency services and the injured man was taken to hospital, where he sadly died from his injuries.

“We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this incident and we believe at this time that Patrick was struck by a vehicle in a hit and run road traffic collision.

“We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area between 1am and 2am on Sunday morning and witnessed the collision, or captured dash-cam or other footage from the area, which could assist with our investigation.”
