It’s the second time the roundabout has flooded in less than two months, and the council has blamed the issue on a nearby blocked culvert
A Swansea roundabout that flooded so badly that locals swam, fished and paddleboarded around it has flooded again after a day of heavy rain. Cwmbwrla Roundabout was submerged by water in September, leading to traffic being diverted for a number of days.
While some saw the funny side and dived into the makeshift swimming pool, concerns were raised when human faeces became visible as water levels receded. Swansea Council carried out work at the site to pump water away from the roundabout, but less than two months later a similar issue appears to have happened again.
On Tuesday afternoon the roundabout was again submerged, with traffic being diverted and cars becoming stuck in water. For the latest Swansea news, sign up to our newsletter here.
Police have attended the scene and said the roundabout is expected to be closed “for some time”. You can get the latest on the weather with our updates here.
A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: “We’re at the scene of a flood on Cwmbwrla Roundabout, Swansea.
“The roundabout is flooded and is not passable from any approach. Vehicles are being diverted to Pentregethin Road.
“It is expected to remain closed for some time. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. We’re grateful for your patience.”

According to Swansea Council, a blocked culvert near to the roundabout is causing the flooding.
A spokesperson for the council said: “Please avoid Cwmbwrla roundabout (Carmarthen Road). Our Highways team is on site. The council is continuing to do everything it can to alleviate flood waters at Cwmbwrla roundabout.
“The culvert underneath the recently demolished Cwmfelin social club is still blocked and is the main cause of this ongoing problem. The club remains responsible for repairing the culvert.
“In the meantime we have brought in pumping equipment to assist with the flow of water.
“However, heavy and prolonged rainfall means the pumping equipment could be overwhelmed and it may be necessary for further closures of this route until the culvert is repaired. We are doing everything we can to reopen the road as soon as possible.”
As a result of the flooding, the A483 Carmarthen Road is closed in both directions on Tuesday evening.
According to traffic monitoring service Inrix: “A483 Carmarthen Road in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to flooding from Cwmbwrla Roundabout to Gors Avenue. The roundabout is closed.”
