A Bucks town has been named Best in the UK for its population category at the RHS Britain in Bloom National Awards.

Held in Brighton, on October 31, Amersham took the coveted Best Town title and a Gold Award, representing the Thames and Chilterns region, after big wins at the RHS regional awards.

It competed against a strong line-up of towns from across the UK, including Brandon, Alnwick, and Abergavenny.

This is the second time in three years that Amersham has been named Best Town — a feat that the Council believes hasn’t been achieved this century.

The town also received the Judges’ Award for Community, recognising the town’s inclusive and wide-reaching approach that brings together residents of all ages.

Steve Catanach, Lead Amersham in Bloom Coordinator, said: “To be named Best Town once again is an incredible honour for Amersham.”

“This award belongs to the whole community — to the council team, volunteers, local groups, schools, businesses, and residents who have all played their part in making our town such a wonderful place to live.

“The level of teamwork and pride here is truly inspiring.”

In addition to the Bloom volunteers and town council team, special thanks were given to the leaders of the 1st Chesham Bois Scout Group, Veolia, Stony Dean School, and waste and highway teams Buckinghamshire Council, all of whom have worked closely with the Town Council over the past year.

Several local businesses and organisations were also described as having been instrumental to the town’s success.

Steve added: “It’s been a genuine community effort.”

“When the judges visited in August, we were proud to showcase the floral displays, art installations, nature areas such as Willow Wood and Pondwicks, and of course the Memorial Gardens — every corner of the town was shining.”

RHS Britain in Bloom Judges Roger Burnett and Ian Beany commented: “Blending strong horticultural flair with artistic talent in both painting and sculpture, displays of high quality were to be found on every corner.

“Biodiversity was everywhere and was the centrepiece — not just an afterthought. The combination of perennial and annual planting at the Memorial Gardens, interspersed with architectural and planted features, makes this area a jewel in the crown.

“A high level of volunteering demonstrated the care and pride that the community have in the place they live.”
