There’s been a ton of chatter about the rising cost of PS5 games and whether GTA 6 could be the first $100 game.
But Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 may get there first.
The aviation experience is landing on Sony’s console on 3rd December, and it has four options available at launch: Standard ($69.99/£69.99), Deluxe ($99.99/£99.99), Premium Deluxe ($129.99/£129.99), Aviator ($199.99/£199.99).
Yes, you read that correctly: $199.99!
The difference between all the versions is primarily the number of aircraft you get access to, with the Standard including 70 aircraft up to 125 aircraft in Aviator.
Seeing as Microsoft doesn’t really explain very intuitively what’s included, this render from Reddit does a decent enough job:
Is 2024 Aviator edition worth it?

To be fair, games like this do tend to lean heavily into DLC, with Train Sim World 6 being another example of a game where you could feasibly spend hundreds of dollars on expansion packs.
But $199.99 does seem extraordinarily expensive for the most premium edition of a game.
Having said that, Sony’s own PS Store pre-order charts show people are willing to pay: in the UK, for example, the Premium Deluxe edition is currently fifth at the time of writing. Standard, meanwhile, is seventh and Aviator is 21st.
We tend to find that the majority of consumers pre-order the most expensive options for games, which is fascinating considering the current economic environment and the rising cost of software at launch.
