Birmingham pro-Palestine supporters have appeared in a demo over a city bridge in a stand against Israel competing in football matches.

Scores of Palestine flags and red cards were held up when protesters were spotted over the A38 Aston Expressway today, Wednesday, November 5.

Banners read: “Kick Israel out of Fifa bab” and “Your pitch, your choice. Boycott Israel.”

The protest comes ahead of Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv’s controversial match against Aston Villa in the Europa League at Villa Park tomorrow night, Thursday, November 6.

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans were banned from attending the game over safety fears following a review by Birmingham’s Safety Advisory Group.

Despite criticism from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Home Secretary and Ladywood MP Shabana Mahmood and Jewish community leaders, the decision remains.

West Midlands Police said that their operation to police the event will involve more than 700 officers on duty. This will include police horses, police dogs and a drone unit.

Demos from at least five different groups will take place around the stadium on the day of the match.

The force has previously revealed its intentions to protect people’s right to protest, while ensuring public safety.
