The Anthropologie team has revealed why it chose Liverpool as the first city in the North West to expand into. The American fashion brand has opened its doors today, Wednesday, November 5, after months of teasing its arrival.

The Liverpool store is 7,000 square feet on one floor and has 5,000 square feet of trading space. It offers customers an “immersive retail experience” thoughtfully designed to reflect the creative spirit of both the brand and the city.

The store features home accessories and clothing, including Anthropologie’s own-label fashion collections, Maeve, Pilcro, and Daily Practice, alongside a curated selection of popular women’s wear brands.

The ECHO spoke with Anthropologie’s managing director, Matt Hilgeman, before the store opened to the public about how the brand plans to fit into the city.

He said: “We’ve been looking at Liverpool for a long time. The creative energy mirrors that of the brands; it just felt like a natural place for us. It made sense for us to put a flag down here in Liverpool to start our expansion to the Northwest.

“It has been a long time coming. It started back in Covid, looking at leases and finding the right place for us. When we found this place in Liverpool ONE, we felt it really commands the corner of the centre, and it felt right for us.

“Liverpool is the first, but we open Glasgow next week and Manchester at the end of the month, so this month alone is an exciting time. Three stores in one month, but many more are to come.

“Any time you open a store, and a customer walks by and sees your brand, that’s a billboard. That is marketing. We know we have a customer here, and it is tapping into that even more now.”

As part of Anthropologie’s commitment to supporting local communities, the Liverpool opening has created 18 new jobs across roles, including store manager, assistant store manager, visual coordinator, and display coordinator, “bringing fresh opportunities to the area’s talented retail workforce”.

The store will see Anthropologie continue its tradition of partnering with local artists, makers, and creatives to collaborate on workshops, activations, and in-store events.

The brand believes this “local-first approach” ensures each Anthropologie location remains unique and deeply rooted in the community it serves.

Matt added: “We are a multi-generational brand. We are for anyone from their mid-twenties to their sixties; with all our curated brands, we have something for everyone across the board.

“If you walk (through) Liverpool ONE, you will find we offer something completely different. We have fun and quirkiness.

“I don’t feel anyone in Liverpool ONE is doing what we are doing, and there certainly isn’t anyone offering a lifestyle approach like we do.”

The store’s opening celebrations will continue on Saturday, November 8. On this day, there will be Merry Nail Art by Oliwia, a Collinge & Co blow-dry bar and gin tasting with Turncoat Distillery.

Opening its doors this autumn, the store will operate Monday to Friday from 10am to 8pm, Saturday from 10am to 7pm, and Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
