Police in Cardiff have been targeted with fireworks on bonfire night on Wednesday in shocking scenes. South Wales Police said on Thursday that their officers had been targeted while on patrol at various bonfires across the region on Wednesday evening.
It comes as the force said they also received well over a thousand call outs in south Wales on Wednesday from people worried about bonfires and fireworks.
A spokesperson said the force had a total of 1,631 calls – 906 calls to 101 and 725 calls to 999. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here
They said: “Sadly, while managing this increased demand and while conducting routine patrols in Cardiff, officers have had fireworks aimed at them and their vehicles.”
The force has opened an investigation to try to find those responsible, a spokesperson said.
Cardiff and Vale policing commander, Chief Superintendent Marc Attwell, said: “We have robust policing plans in place to ensure our communities can enjoy bonfire night safely.
“This includes running proactive patrols by PCs and PCSOs in busy areas. For officers to be subjected to this type of behaviour is completely unacceptable.
“They, along with other emergency services colleagues, should not have to be put at risk of burns or more serious injury because of the dangerous actions of others. It is fortunate that no officers were injured last night.”
He added: “To those who did enjoy their evenings safely and without putting themselves or others at risk, thank you.
“By doing so you ensured officers could swiftly and appropriately respond to the demand placed upon them, including conducting arrests on suspicion of serious assaults, sexual offences, and possession of offensive weapons.”
