Police Scotland also raced to Wardie Road in Easterhouse to assist with traffic management.

Officers flung up blue and white tape around nearby streets affected by the inferno.

A cop car flashed its blue lights to alert drivers of the danger as shocked youngsters watched as flames ripped through the building.

An onlooker said: “The fire looks like it’s really taken hold, there are emergency services everywhere.

“You can see the grey smoke for miles, hopefully, firefighters can extinguish it before somebody is hurt.”

Elsewhere, another officer, wearing a high-vis vest, has cordoned off a separate part of the road next to a wooded area.

It’s understood residential properties that look onto the site of the fire are unaffected.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remains on the scene.

A spokesman said: “We were called today at 15.12 to reports of a fire at a derelict building on Wardie Road, Glasgow.

“Two appliances were originally deployed but we now have a total of four, including a high reach, on the scene.”

It is unclear what has sparked today’s fire in Glasgow.

The fire service confirmed an update would be released on the incident in due course.
