Newcastle United’s stars have taken to social media
Sandro Tonali with the man of the match award
Sandro Tonali’s post-match comments have caused something of a stir despite the Newcastle United star admitting he is still happy on Tyneside.
The Italian midfielder was questioned about his future after the Champions League game against Athletic Bilbao, and admitted he isn’t focusing on the long term. Tonali signed a contract extension during his suspension for gambling offences, that keeps him at the club until at least 2029.
Newcastle remain keen to tie the player down to new terms, however, with Tonali’s performances attracting transfer attention from several other clubs around Europe.
The 25-year-old was at it again in midweek with a man of the match performance at St James’ Park in the Champions League win over Bilbao. The star picked up the award after the 2-0 win where he helped Newcastle gain midfield control.
Afterwards, the Italy international took to Instagram to express his feelings. He posted ‘European nights @nufc’ with two heart emojis – one black, the other white – which showed his love for the Magpies.
Dan Burn’s one-word reply to Tonali was equally telling, simply posting ‘Unreal’ in reference to his teammate’s performance.
Meanwhile, skipper Bruno Guimaraes also took to Instagram after the game. The Brazilian had battled through illness to make the starting XI, though he was replaced just after the hour mark with United in control of the tie.
He posted: “9 of 12 in the @championsleague everything for you @nufc.”
Newcastle travel to Brentford on Sunday for a crunch Premier League clash at the Gtech Stadium. United’s away form in the league has been poor, culminating in a woeful 3-0 defeat at West Ham last weekend.
Dutch defender Sven Botman was delighted with the way his side hit back from that disappointment as he also celebrated the Bilbao win on the same platform, saying: “The response we needed to keep pushing towards our goals. See you Sunday, Mags.”
