Once symbols of EU–Russia cooperation, the Pendolino Allegros linked Helsinki and St. Petersburg with high-speed service, a joint venture between Finland and Russia’s state-backed operators. But with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, that partnership collapsed, leaving the state-of-the-art trains idle and falling into disrepair. Now fully owned by VR, the trains are back on the tracks — but now rebranded as Pendolino Plus and exclusively serving domestic routes as Finland definitively decouples from its eastern neighbour.
